The first of the Republican Presidents was Abraham Lincoln who took office on May 4th, 1861. As America’s 16th president, he is most famous for leading the nation through its worst internal conflict, the Civil War. Unfortunately, he is also famous for being the nation’s first president to be assassinated. A lesser known achievement of his is bringing strength and organization to the Republican Party. As a result of his efforts, the Republican Party is often referred to as the Party of Lincoln.
Beginning with Lincoln, there have been nineteen Republicans to serve as President of the United States. Like Lincoln, some of them are famous figures of American history. Others are relatively forgotten by today’s generations. Some have been mired in controversy and some have had tough decisions forced upon them during times of national crisis. Anyone who has ever said being president is an easy job never held the office. This site is dedicated to those Republican Presidents who have served our nation in its highest office.
